When Painkillers Won’t be Available, Try This

Oh, nothing is as painful as having a headache or back pain and no pain reliever. What is one to do? Well, these herbs below can help relieve your pain. Keep in mind though that while these remedies are natural, they can still have some negative effects. If you use any of these remedies and feel odd or breakout in a rash, stop the use immediately.

White Willow Bark

When painkillers won’t be available, try This - White Willow

Many people think that pain is a new symptom, which it really is not. Native Americans have used white willow bark to treat all sorts of pain. This plant was so popular that it became the source of aspirin, which is made in chemical laboratories today.

The recipe for white willow tea will be based on purchased dried bark.

Tea: To make white willow tea, you will need to start with two cups of water. Place two full tablespoons of white willow bark in the water and bring to a boil. Keep the water boiling for 10 minutes and then take the pot off the heat. Let the water and white willow bark steep for 30 minutes. Once this time period has passed, strain the bark out of the water and enjoy.

When painkillers won’t be available, try This - White Willow tinctureTincture:  This does require fresh white willow that is harvested in the spring. What you will need to do is to harvest enough fresh bark so that it fills a jar 2/3 full of the bark. Then, cover the bark with vodka making sure that you leave one inch from the top of the jar. Screw the lid on and shake the jar so that the vodka and bark mix. Allow it to set for several months and shake often. After the vodka/white willow bark has steeped to your liking, strain the bark out and store your tincture in amber bottles with droppers. When you need some pain relief, simply add a few drops of your DIY white willow tincture to the water and drink. Keep in mind when using this technique, only start with one or two drops and adjust as needed.

As with commercial aspirin, white willow bark is considered a blood thinner. If you are taking a medication that thins your blood and using white willow bark for pain you may discover that it takes more time to stop bleeding and may bruise more easily.

Ginger

Now, if you have pain associated with arthritis then you may want to consider using ginger in a tea. You may be wondering how this culinary herb works in relieving pain. Well, in a nutshell, ginger lowers the level of prostaglandin, which will ease the pain and inflammation of arthritis.

Ginger Tea: To get the relief you desire you do not necessarily have to eat a dish with ginger in it. Instead, simply enjoy a cup of ginger tea.

This beverage starts with four cups of water in a pot. To this pot, add a thumb-size piece of ginger to the water and bring to a boil. Once the liquid has started to boil, continue to boil for five minutes. Strain the liquid at this point and sweeten it with honey and lemon if you would like. At this point, your ginger tea is ready to enjoy.

Curcumin

You may not be familiar with curcumin but you may know the spice that this substance can be found in and that is turmeric. While curcumin does not relieve headache pain, it does provide some relief from pain linked with autoimmune disorders. How you may ask? Well, curcumin seems to take over pro-inflammatory proteins called cytokines, which cause inflammation and pain. When it comes to getting curcumin, start with turmeric-rich dishes such as curry and drinks like golden milk to get relief.

When painkillers won’t be available, trI know at this point you are scratching your head going, golden milk!

While you may have never heard of it, this beverage combines two ingredients that are known to treat pain. This includes ginger and turmeric. The recipe for this beverage is very simple. It starts off with a ½ cup of milk that is placed in a saucepan. To the milk add 1 teaspoon turmeric, 1 small piece of fresh ginger or ½ teaspoon of ground, ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, 1 pinch of black pepper, and 1 teaspoon of honey or maple syrup to taste. Heat the combined ingredients on the stove and bring to a boil. Once a boil has been reached, turn the heat down and simmer for 10 minutes. At this point, remove the pot from the heat and strain the liquid. To add more flavor, sprinkle the top of the milk with cinnamon before serving.

Bromelain

When painkillers won’t be available, try This - Pineapple

This may surprise you but did you know that pineapple can relieve all sorts of pain, which ranges from arthritis to trauma-related inflammation. The connection between eating a pineapple and pain relief is simple. It reduces the amount of prostaglandin, which reduces inflammation and pain.

Now the downside of eating pineapple for pain relief is the amount you need to eat. Simply put, you will need to consume a whole pineapple every day to get pain relief but there is another choice. There is an extract that can be mixed with a liquid that can give you the relief you desire without the chore of eating a whole pineapple every day.

tried the others already but the Bromelain suggestion sounds so good! thanks for such great recipes!!

I see you have a recipe for fibromyalgia pain, but what about the loss of energy? Do you have a recipe that will give me my energy back?

I am so thankful for what you post each day.

Man, If you could only know how much all these things help me . Thank you all so much….

What a great post!! Thank you!!

Where to get white willow bark

You can order it from Amazon or from a willow tree! I have one in my yard, and it works amazingly!!

Most health food stores have it.

If there is a known contraindication for using any of these, please include that info. IE…willow and blood thinners, esp warfarin….big no-no. Also warfarin and anything w high vit K content. Love your book on lost herbs. Will probably buy foraging next.

i have heard tumeric should not be heated like that or loses effect, to add after it cools down.

I was surprised you did not include wild lettuce

Hi Debra,

Thank you for your interest in our work.

Wild Lettuce is indeed one of the best natural painkillers. More details in the article below:

Many blessings and good health!

I use the lucky lettuce tincture for pain and when I have trouble surround cute to the pain. Thank you.

Prickly lettuce

Beautifully concise with valuable info.
Thank you for keeping it short and to the point!!
My only suggestion would be to keep the ingredients vegan …which is better for our bodies & our planet.
Using non-dairy milk, such as oat or flax milk could be suggested in your ingredients.
Also, we have a honeybee crisis … maple syrup would be a better option then honey.
Thank you for your wisdom. 🌱

Not everyone is vegan. Maybe add vegan alternatives.

Grasasfed cow milk is rich in nutrients. Grass feeding cows on a mob grazing rotation is great for the environment, other plants and animals. K2 vitamin from grassfed meats and dairy is needed to direct calcium to bones and teeth. Without it, the calcium goes to soft tissue and joints and eyes. That’s how we get cataracts. I love my garden plants and meats.

Or, maybe if you are vegan, you already know how to substitute and the writer need not worry.

You never said what the extract is that can be mixed with water ,instead of a whole pineapple to get bromelain. 🤔 would love to know what the extract is

took a while for someone to notice this

Me too! I use Kratom but its from Malaysia or somewhere like that. Can I make the wild lettuce extract from dried material? Does bromelain enzymes work as well?

Following…I want to know, too

Hi,

Bromelain is a group of enzymes derived from the stems of pineapples, although it exists in all parts of the fresh pineapple.

The extract is more concentrated. So instead of eating a whole pineapple every day, you can simply add a few drops of this extract to your drink: it can be water, tea, coffee, etc.

You can find Pineapple extract at your local health store or on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Bromelain-Extract-Tincture-Supplement-Unfiltered/dp/B00R9C73Q6?th=1

or you can make it yourself at home, the same way you will make a herbal tincture.
You will need ( Pineapple Chunks + 1 cup Overproof Vodka / White Rum).

Many blessings and good health!

thank you for this amazing information.

I’m surprised wild lettuce or plantain isn’t mentioned here.

I thought the same thing

Hi there! What do you think of the ginger & tumeric supplements on Amazon? Will they have the same affect or do you need to get ginger and tumeric powder?

Thank you so much for providing great information. I love your book and looking forward to learn more about The Lost Herbs.

Thank you

What specific white willow!
There are 200 species of willow. Can you be specific.

Hi Jamie,

Thank you for your comment.

There are indeed, over 200 species of willow but the one used medicinally is White Willow. This is mentioned in the article and even the subtitle is called “White Willow Bark”.

Salix alba, the white willow, is a species of willow native to Europe and western and central Asia.

Many blessings and good health!

Thanks to The Lost Herbs for lovely resources!
Also, Heads-up, for anyone using vegan dairy-alternatives, or any other food-supplement from aseptic carton or other aluminum-lined packaging: I suggest notice (kinesiologically or however else you screen for bioindividual biocompatibility) how much aluminum the product has uptaken from the packaging and is adding to your system’s metal-detox workload, RF/EMF susceptibility, etc.. My system, thankfully, objects immediately (with immune and other discomforts) — doesn’t wait around for long-term cumulative impacts, but gives me plenty of incentive to avoid such exposures in the first place. I know not everyone has this advantage. But just think about pouring hot pasteurized liquids into one of the most volatile metals that’s solid at room temperature? I’ve had manufacturers tell me there’s a layer of plastic separating the metal from the foods. Well, that layer is disappearingly thin (my system, for one, doesn’t find it sufficient to prevent discomforts and weeks of detox-work to do all over again). I’d encourage anybody to check it for yourselves — how much can any metals-detox herbs keep pace with ongoing exposures?
