Bentonite clay is a powerful detoxifying agent that can remove impurities from the mouth for a deep, long-lasting clean. Not only does it detoxify the mouth, but adding it to your toothpaste can detoxify your entire body, drawing out heavy metals and other toxins.
Cinnamon Powder
Ground cinnamon is antimicrobial and can protect the mouth against dental diseases. It also freshens the breath and helps whiten the teeth. You’ll notice that this DIY recipe uses cinnamon sparingly to not irritate sensitive mouth tissue.
Baking Soda

How to Make All-Natural Toothpaste
This simple recipe is easy to make and makes enough toothpaste to last you a couple of months.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon activated charcoal (optional)
- 2 tablespoons bentonite clay
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 1 teaspoon dried peppermint powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, softened or melted
- 5–10 drops essential oil
- 1–2 tablespoons water
Step One: Mix the activated charcoal, bentonite clay, cinnamon powder, peppermint powder, and baking soda in a glass or wooden bowl. Avoid using metal bowls and utensils, as they can react negatively with the bentonite clay.
Step Two: Add the coconut oil and essential oils. Mix well.
Step Three: Add 1-2 tablespoons of water until you reach your desired consistency. Store in an airtight container in a dark place.
How to Use This Remedy
Scoop a pea-sized amount onto your toothbrush using a plastic or wooden spoon. Remember to avoid metal utensils due to bad reactions with the bentonite clay. Brush your teeth gently, especially if using the activated charcoal option.
If using activated charcoal, you’ll also need to rinse your teeth thoroughly, as this ingredient can get messy. Note that those with sensitive teeth or weakened enamel may want to eliminate activated charcoal, which is fine, as baking soda is a great stain-lifting agent.
This remedy is safe for both adults and children. If you make it for children, stick with light essential oils like orange, as stronger scents can be overpowering. You can store the toothpaste in an airtight container for up to two months.
Depending on your climate, the toothpaste may thin out or become more solid. If you prefer tooth powder, simply reduce the coconut oil to ½ a tablespoon or eliminate it. Remember to spit out the toothpaste after brushing your teeth and to watch children closely to ensure they brush correctly.
