The Shocking Thing Garlic Does To Your Liver

How often do you think about the health of your liver? Unless you already have a liver problem, probably not a whole lot. While we may not often stop to consider how our diet and lifestyle affect our liver, being more aware of how our choices impact this important organ is crucial to our overall vitality. Things we eat influence our liver health. Here’s the shocking thing garlic does to your liver.

The liver has many essential functions, including filtering toxins out of our blood, helping our bodies to break down the food we eat into usable nutrients, regulating our hormones, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, and more. A liver that doesn’t function properly can cause a lot of serious health issues and may even lead to death.

Most people know that consuming alcoholic beverages in moderation is important for liver health. The liver is responsible for breaking down any alcohol in the blood, so drinking more than 4 oz per day of hard liquor can cause liver scarring, known as cirrhosis. Alcohol isn’t the only toxic substance that can cause liver damage, however. Some medications, herbs, and chemicals, including pesticides, can also be harmful and should be avoided.

Poor diet and lack of exercise can also lead to poor liver health. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease occurs when fat accumulates on the liver, impairing its function. The most common cause of this condition is obesity, which can typically be improved with healthy lifestyle changes.

Benefits of Garlic for the Liver

Garlic is best known for its many culinary uses. But, it does so much more than adding delicious flavor to your meals! Garlic also has powerful medicinal properties. Research has proven that it has numerous health benefits including boosting immune function, reducing blood pressure and cholesterol, and helping to protect the brain from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. One study even showed that eating more garlic may help you live longer!

Including more garlic in your diet can also have some shocking benefits for the liver. Whether you’re already having liver problems or just want to keep this vital organ functioning optimally, you’ll want to start consuming more of this powerful herb. Here are a few of the ways that garlic improves liver health.

Protects the Liver from Damage

Garlic is hepatoprotective, which means that it can help to prevent the liver from being damaged by substances that cause dangerous liver injuries. Though medications, alcohol, certain herbs, and dietary choices can all cause liver damage, garlic can help to reduce the harmful effects of some of these things.

Lowers Liver Enzyme Levels

ALT and AST are enzymes that are usually found in the blood in small amounts. An increase in ALT and AST, however, can indicate liver damage or disease. One study on individuals with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease found that consuming garlic daily helped to decrease ALT and AST blood levels.

Reduces Fat Build Up in the Liver

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease can cause irreversible damage to the liver, negatively impacting its ability to function properly. However, multiple studies have shown that regular consumption of garlic reduces fat accumulation on the liver in individuals with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

May Reduce Rate of Liver Cancer

Garlic has been shown to have some promising anti-cancer effects. One study in China found that eating garlic twice a week was associated with a decreased risk of developing liver cancer.

I grow organic garlic and love it!

Ben, do you sell it? I have tried to grow it but to no avail. I am not a good gardener. I have a small terrace and tried several times…everyone says it is so easy.

Kristine Clay your article may be full of knowledge and facts about “garlic” but let me tell you, “your knowledge of English language sucks”. Yup, you read that right.

Shock/shocking is “negative” conotation, always, no exception. Your headline is so messed up, its not funny.

You should’ve used “surprise/surprising” instead.

I eat so much garlic, that the moment I read your headline, my heart jumped to my throat. Only after the realization that u suck at Eng lang did I started to breathe.

That was my reaction as well but the use of the word ‘Shocking’ is so common in headlines now that I presume it is just our ever evolving language that I refuse to keep up with. Normally I pass by ‘Shocking’ headlines because it looks like click bait. It was kind of reassuring to read your comment and find I wasn’t alone in my reaction.

You are SHOCKINGLY rude. Idiot

I agree with shockingly rude & not of benefit to anyone but the very negative. If you don’t have anything good to say then don’t say anything at all! Who cares what the one word in title of article is. The content is good to know. Thank you for this wonderful article!

Thank you for this wonderful information. I plan to make this soon and use to help out this ever working liver of mine. What a marvelous organ !!!

Sorry but I agree, the use of the word shocking is so misleading, it plants doubt in your mind straight away and an instant fear like “what am I doing to my liver?”, a better headline might have been “The Amazing Benefit Garlic Gives To Your Liver” … just a thought for future reference!.
