DIY Black Walnut Remedy
You will need:
- 7 whole green walnuts
- 80-proof vodka
- ¼ cup olive oil
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- quart canning jar with lid
- a pair of gloves
- a sharp knife
- a dark-colored glass bottle with a dropper
Black walnuts should be the freshest you can find, and if you can get them when they are still very green, that’s the best option.
Here is a complete and easy guide to identifying and harvesting edible and medicinal plants, and how to spot poisonous lookalikes.
Steps:
When you have gathered all your supplies, put your gloves on. If you do not, your hands will be stained for weeks. Also, be mindful of what else these hulls and shells come in contact with before, during, and after the process.
In my childhood, my grandmother made a wonderful black walnut cake. She would run over the walnuts with her car to open them. Yes, they’re a hard nut to crack. In this recipe, the hulls are used, not the meat or nuts inside the inner shell. The green hull can be opened with just a knife, so the nuts can be used for other purposes.
Anyway, making black walnut tincture is very easy:
- Fill a quart canning jar about ⅔ full with vodka.
- Cut the walnut hulls and place in the jar.
- Pour about 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in to help preserve the tincture.
- . Pour about ¼ cup of olive oil in to help create a barrier from oxidation over time.
- Make sure the top of the hulls are covered with the vodka, lemon juice, and olive oil mix.
- Cap the filled jar, without stirring the mix, then place in the refrigerator.
- The tincture is ready to use anywhere from as quickly as a couple of hours, to as long as 4-6 weeks of sitting. Obviously the longer it steeps, the more potent it will be for you. The other factor in its effectiveness and strength is the freshness of the back walnuts. The sooner you’ll pick them from a tree, the more potent the tincture.
- Once the tincture is ready to use, strain the mix to remove the hulls and excess debris. Pour the liquid into small dark-colored bottles that have droppers.
The shelf life depends on the freshness of the hulls used. It could last for years, but will be more effective in the earlier stages.
How to Use
In order to use it as an intestinal parasite cleanse, the dropper comes in handy. Take 20 drops of the tincture three times a day. To give you an idea of how long this should last, a 2 oz bottle should hold about 60 servings.
If you’re looking for a topical aid for skin conditions, use a cotton swab dipped in the tincture and dab on the area in question. Be careful though, as it will stain your skin for some time.
A dropperful of the tincture can also be used for athlete’s foot. Add it to a gallon of warm water in a small tub, and use it as a foot soak. This could also stain, but it’s far less concentrated than the dose listed above.
No matter what ailment you are seeking help for, hopefully this black walnut tincture will aid you in finding relief soon!

Where can we acquire green walnuts, I live in San Antonio, Texas?
I was just about to ask the same thing. I’m in Houston.
Same, Massachusetts
Massachusetts has black walnut trees but very rare.
Black walnuts grow profusely in NE Tenneesee on our farm. Most go to waste so need to find a market for them. They ripen and start falling around August. Contact me in early August and maybe we can make arrangements to get some to you. We travel between Tennessee and the Houston TX area. kk karkit75@yahoo.com
