Winter takes its toll on skin, and it’s no wonder! Between below-zero temperatures and dry indoor air, your skin’s barrier takes a major hit.

It’s important to know which natural herbs and moisturizers are best for winter skin care (spoiler: you have plenty of options!). Here are some of our top picks that soothe skin and help restore your barrier.

Shea Butter and Tallow: These rich moisturizers are similar to skin’s natural oils and lock in natural moisture. Plus, they repair the skin’s barrier, leaving it looking better than before. In the winter, you want to focus on thick moisturizers, and shea butter and tallow are ideal options. Plus, they’re both easily sourced.

Olive Oil and Sweet Almond Oil: Olive oil has been used for centuries to beautify skin and contains vitamin E and other polyphenols that counteract oxidative stress caused by cold temperatures. Sweet almond oil is another excellent choice that rejuvenates the skin through a range of antioxidants.

Calendula: This bright flower has the ability to heal wounds, making it perfect for chapped, cracked skin. When infused in olive oil, you have a moisturizer that works better than any over-the-counter cream.

Chamomile: A classic anti-inflammatory herb, chamomile is ideal for sensitive skin. You can use it interchangeably for calendula in our Tallow, Calendula, and Rosehip Healing Balm. Chamomile can also reduce redness, making it a great ingredient for facial skincare.

Rosehip: Most often infused into oil, rosehip is a luxurious herb rich in vitamin C, which can help brighten the skin. Skin can often look dull in the winter, and rosehip’s antioxidants and minerals can boost collagen, bringing it back to life.

Horsetail: Known for its unique shape, horsetail is a powerhouse herb that has proved successful in various studies. In one study, horsetail accelerated wound healing in diabetic rats, resulting in a significant increase in collagen. While studies with human subjects are limited, we can only assume horsetail works in the same way.

You can use these herbs and moisturizers individually, but they work best when used synergistically. This winter, skip the store-bought treatments that strip skin of sebum and embrace the best nature has to give. Utilize these herbs and moisturizers every day, and your skin will remain soft and supple, regardless of what the forecast holds.

What we’ve covered here is just a handful of the medicinal plants that can transform your health. But there are nearly 1,000 plants with documented healing properties that most of us will never learn about.

Dr. Nicole Apelian has spent decades compiling the knowledge of over 900 medicinal plants into The Lost Book of Herbal Remedies I and II. And right now, she’s offering both books as a bundle at a price that actually makes sense. Click here for the special offer Nicole prepared for you.

Think about what you’d spend on a single pharmacy trip. These books give you access to remedies you can make yourself, no prescriptions needed.

How to Make Tallow, Calendula, and Rosehip Healing Balm

This luxurious balm is a must-have for anyone wanting to keep their skin supple and soft this winter. It’s also incredibly easy to make; simply melt a few ingredients together, infuse them with herbs, and pour the mixture into a small jar to harden. Tallow, Calendula, and Rosehip Healing Balm is also a great gift that looks (and feels!) expensive.

If you’d rather skip the DIY process, there’s the All-Purpose First Aid Salve. One of the most effective formulas I’ve found for cuts, scrapes, rashes, and bruises. Everything in it is organic, and you can see the full ingredient list here if you want to make your own version.

But if you’re looking for something ready to use, this is it. The kind of product you keep everywhere—your bag, your car, your medicine cabinet. Moving on to today’s recipe:

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons dried calendula flowers
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup grass-fed tallow
  • 1 tablespoon beeswax pellets
  • 1 tablespoon rosehip seed oil

How to Use This Remedy

This Tallow, Calendula, and Rosehip Healing Balm is one of the most versatile winter remedies.

Massage a small amount into the desired area—a pea-sized dab goes a long way. Use it nightly after bathing to lock in moisture, or as a lip balm, cuticle cream, or heel balm. It’s safe for all ages, including babies as a natural diaper cream.

The vitamin E and beeswax create a protective barrier without artificial fragrances or preservatives, making it safe for nursing and pregnant mothers.

This balm works year-round, especially for sensitive skin or eczema. Feel free to customize it—add plantain leaf for extra skin repair, geranium essential oil for anti-aging benefits, or vanilla absolute for a luxurious scent.

Store in a cool, dark place. It lasts 6 months at room temperature, longer in the refrigerator. Always use clean, dry fingers or a spoon to prevent contamination, and discard if you notice mold, rancid smell, or odd texture.03 Herbal Skincare for Winter How to Use copy

Making this balm yourself sounds simple, but here’s the reality.

Grass-fed tallow isn’t at your local store. Organic calendula flowers take weeks to arrive online. Then you’re spending 15-20 minutes actively infusing oils, plus prep and cleanup time. And the cost? By the time you buy tallow, beeswax, rosehip seed oil, essential oils, and vitamin E separately, you’re easily at $40-60—most of which sits unused.

There’s a better way.

The Winter Defense Bundle gives you everything you need for the harsh months ahead, already made and ready to use. It includes the All-Purpose First Aid Salve (with an even more complex formula than the recipe above), plus the Bronchial Blend Tincture for respiratory support, Elderberry Tincture to keep your immune system strong, and Yarrow Tincture for wound healing and fever reduction.

All organic. All from trusted, wild-harvested sources. All for less than you’d spend trying to make these yourself. Click here for the special bundle. WDB

Break Free From The Pharma Cycle

If you’re tired of being trapped in the pharmaceutical cycle: the expensive prescriptions, the side effects, the dependency, there’s a better path forward.

You need a complete herbal resource laid out like an actual pharmacy, where you can look up exactly what you need. The one I recommend contains the Memory Elixir that improves memory by up to 75%, Nature’s Aspirin for pain relief without stomach bleeds, or the Herbal Parasite Flush that helps expel worms and gut infections naturally.

And hundreds more remedies for your nervous system (sleep, anxiety, brain fog), digestive system (bloating, IBS, leaky gut), immune system (colds, flu, infections), cardiovascular health (blood pressure, circulation, cholesterol), hormone balance (thyroid, cortisol, PCOS), skin problems (wounds, eczema, burns), joint and muscle pain, and so much more.

Each remedy comes with step-by-step instructions, color photos, exact measurements, and dosages. Dr. Nicole Apelian has poured over 30 years of plant knowledge into this book. The same remedies that helped her go from bedridden with MS to thriving without a single pharmaceutical drug in 20 years.
