DIY Painkilling Extract From a Pineapple

The bromelain in pineapple is an enzyme that has many medicinal benefits. Pineapples have been used in traditional medicine in Central and South America for centuries and possibly even longer. It is used to reduce inflammation, dress wounds, and aid digestion. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that bromelain itself was isolated.

Today, bromelain is used in a wide variety of treatments to help reduce pain and treat certain ailments. While bromelain is found in the fleshy fruit and juice of pineapples, it’s more highly concentrated in the inner core. Bromelain can be taken and used in a number of ways. It can be used topically in the form of a cream to heal wounds and burns or taken orally to reduce pain and treat and/or prevent certain medical conditions. When taken orally, it’s often taken in the form of tablets, powder, or capsules.

Today, I’ll show you how to make a DIY painkilling extract from pineapple to benefit from the bromelain. First, let’s look at how it can reduce pain and what other medical conditions it can help with.

The Painkilling Effect of Bromelain

Bromelain has analgesic properties, making it a great natural painkiller. It also has excellent anti-inflammatory properties that reduce swelling and hence reduce pain and symptoms of many conditions. For this reason, it’s sometimes used to relieve sporting-related injuries. It’s also been used as a post-surgery pain remedy although studies have been mixed on this. Some surgeries where it did provide relief include foot, nasal, and dental surgery.

Here are some of the most common medical conditions where it’s used to help treat pain.

  • Arthritis & Osteoarthritis – it can help people living with arthritis or osteoarthritis by reducing swelling and joint pain. While studies have shown various results, many indicate that the benefits increase after steady treatment for weeks.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – it can also help relieve pain in the fingers of people living with carpal tunnel syndrome as well as tingling, numbing, and other symptoms experienced.

The Medicinal Benefits of Bromelain

Bromelain can also be used to treat or prevent a number of medical conditions.

Bromelain

  • Cancer – it can help protect against or fight some forms of cancer such as breast cancer by slowing the growth of cancer cells. It may also help people with leukemia, sarcoma, and lung cancer.
  • Sinusitis – it can reduce the nasal inflammation patients experience and make breathing easier. It may also reduce the time that people experience acute symptoms related to sinusitis.
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) – it can suppress inflammation caused by IBD.
  • Asthma – it can help treat asthma by reducing inflammation of the airway. Bromelain also reduces the mucus that collects in the respiratory systems of people with asthma.
  • DIY Painkilling Extract -PineappleStrokes – it has anti-clotting properties which can help prevent strokes. Bromelain supports the health of cardiac tissue and prevents inflammation caused by plaque build-up in blood vessels.
  • Digestion – it aids in digestion by breaking down proteins like collagen into amino acids. It also speeds up slow digestion so can help reduce cramping and other side effects.
  • Cardiovascular Disease – it reduces systolic blood pressure which can help fight cardiovascular disease.
  • Colitis – it can help reduce inflammation and treat mucosal ulcers.

Bromelain is considered safe for most people to take and is classified as a dietary supplement by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, there are some drugs it may interfere with such as blood-thinning medication. It also enhances the effect of some types of drugs such as antibiotics, anti-seizure medications, and sedatives. If you take any medication, check with your doctor before taking bromelain to make sure that it’s safe for you. It’s also not recommended for pregnant women.

  • Vodka (minimum 40% alcohol)DIY Painkilling Extract from a Pineapple - Utensils
Utensils
  • Sharp knife
  • Chopping board
  • Glass jar
  • Fine strainer
  • Cheesecloth
  • Container / bowl
  • Dropper bottles

Method

Step 1. Cut off the pineapple skin* and then cut around the inner core of the pineapple. You might like to cut the fruit up at this stage and place it in a container so it’s ready to eat later as a snack or for breakfast etc.( *If you’re interested, you can make tepache using the pineapple skin. It’s a fermented Mexican drink that’s a probiotic and helps promote friendly gut bacteria. It’s quick to prepare and then just requires around three days for the fermentation process to take place.)

Step 2. Take your core and cut it into small rings.

Step 4. Close the lid tight and place your jar in a cupboard so that it’s away from heat and light and you’re going to keep it there for around six weeks.

Step 5. Once six weeks is up, remove your jar from the cupboard and take a container or bowl to catch the liquid you’re about to strain. Place a fine strainer over the container. Step 6. Remove the lid from your jar and pour all of the contents over the cheesecloth. You can discard your used pineapple core pieces.DIY Painkilling Extract from a Pineapple - Step 6

Step 7. Pour your bromelain extract into a dropper bottle or bottles, depending on how much liquid you have and how big your dropper bottles are. Your extract is now ready.DIY Painkilling Extract from a Pineapple - Bromelain

You can take 1ml up to three times a day (spread them out so you take one in the morning, afternoon, and evening). Some studies have suggested that bromelain is most effective when taken on an empty stomach to fight inflammation, so you could try taking a dose before or in between breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you want to take it to aid digestion, it’s recommended to take it with meals. Store your bromelain extract in a cool dark cupboard and it will keep for up to six months.

Bromelain works for pets, too. We had an old German Shepherd with arthritic hips, and this along with Boswellia helped more than the vet-prescribed meds. As a side note, Bromelain or chopped up pineapple added to dog food will keep the dog from eating their poo. 🙂

How do you administer to a pet? I have a cat with arthritis. I’d love to help her naturally!

Please research first if cats can tolerate pineapple. Cats do not have the same detox system as dogs do, even with dogs you must check everything. I work with cats a lot (and dogs). You want to find a reputable site such as a holistic vet as this would be holistic. Please do through research first, I’ve seen things happen out of love that ended bad, maybe not right away, even years down the road. I have a recue who while in the shelter was in the medical and given meds so much for the first 1 1/2 years of his life. At this age I fostered him. Because of all the Meds/stress, he now has CKD (kidney disease). Non holistic vet treatment I was not comfortable with, it just went against everything. I did much research, and came up with my plane for him and it is working. This is not curable, but it is controllable. After his last surgery (few years into foster) it was said he could be put back up for adoption, he was already at home and we just made it official. He had lots of emotional/trust problems as well which him and I worked on, six years later he is a different boy. I had fostered his brother (not litter) at 5 weeks old, also with huge trust issues. They have their forever home. Always research any thing first, it can take lots of time, it is worth it. Side note: If there is a dehydration problem, stop dry food(slowly), it competes for the water, add anywhere between 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of water to wet food. Also think about what a cat normally would eat in the wild, they get moisture from their pray. Hope this helps you or anyone reading this. Have a great day.

I’d use a dropper bottle down their throat unless theyll eat in in their food

Would there be any benefit to running the pineapple mixture through a blender before straining?

There might be a benefit to running it through a blender before extraction, due to increased surface area exposure to the solvent. Blending immediately before straining is probably just wasted effort, though. Blessings to you.

Very good question. I’m thinking it would be a good thing and I will do it with mine. Thank you…don’t believe I would have thought of that.

When you say the stem do you mean the core of the pineapple or the inside of the leafy top?

I wondered the same thing. The pictures look like the core.

Hi Patricia,

Unfortunately, I wrote stem instead of core throughout the article. As
you pointed out, it should be the *core *of the pineapple used for this
recipe. I apologize for any confusion.

Many blessings and good health!

Anyone know if this could also be made alcohol free with food grade glycerin? TIA!

If you make your own vinegar that is a very good solvent in place of the vodka. Or use homemade wine as your solvent. What I have done is fermented my pineapple with 1/2 cup raw honey and a couple cups f water (not tap water). I blend the water and honey in a blender and pour into the quart jar where I have the pineapple fruit a core. Not the skin because I can’t get organic pesticide free. I add 1/4 cup of an already made fermentation starter to it, leave on bench for 3 days burp it once a day then it goes in fridge and I drink a shot glass of it every night. I strain the fruit out the second time around and make a fresh lot while my fermented juice I did is being drunk from the fridge.

Thank you, Pam—would 1/4 cup homemade kombucha be considered a good “fermentation starter”?

Re the kombucha, im not sure, I have used it (1/4 cup) to kick start my fermentation starter however, I haven’t tried it as an actual “ferment”, just a kick starter for making a ferment. You would still need the Honey to feed it and make it ferment. You could do that with any fruit fresh or dry or scraps from apples etc. A really good reliable alrounder ferment starter is with raisins, it’s just a couple of handfuls of raisins/sultanas in a pint jar with water and sugar and 3 to five days it lasts for over 12 months if kept in fridge and fed once a week.

So many questions!! I’m learning. So the raisins, how much sugar & water to start & what to I “feed” it (& how much). How do I make vinegar?

Hi! How much the Vodka to use? Thank you!

The amount of vodka would be the amount that would cover the fruit.

Depends on how much pineapple you are using. Try to cover the pineapple with vodka.

Your timing is amazing. Just bought 22 pineapples to dehydrate. I stared some vinegar and was wondering what to do with the rest of the scraps.

Can it be taken if you are on blood pressure meds?

Hi Barb,

Bromelain may intensify the effect of blood pressure meds and make your
blood pressure go below the recommended level. Speak to your doctor before
taking bromelain to see if it will impact the way your drugs function.

Many blessings and good health!

Can I make this in my Infuzium 420, so it cuts the timing down immensely, or does it have to ferment in the vodka for weeks?

So you are only using the center core and not the edible pineapple, right?

Yes, the core

Can this brew longer than 6 weeks? I made some and forgot about it in my pantry. Wondering if it is still good.

Why will this only keep for 6 months being that it is extracted in 80 proof alcohol? Is there a reason it will not store as long as other tinctures or extracts? I’m asking because I want to make a big batch but not sure it can be used up in 6 months. Thanks.

I was curious about this as well.. it should last years with alcohol 🤷🏻‍♀️ Maybe it’s the sugars from the fresh core?

The tinctures will last longer than 6 months they’re pickled in the alcohol , when not in use keep in a cool dark area .

I thought the same thing, thinking it might be the freshness of the fruit. But I also done a watermelon extract using the flesh of the watermelon and it states that it will last a year. And that recipe is on this same website. I would think that pineapple and watermelon would be the same in water and sugar content. So why does the pineapple extract only last 6 months and watermelon extract 1 year using the exact same method?

If I dehydrated the core first, would the tincture last longer but still be effective?

I keep a couple of pieces of fresh pineapple in the freezer for cuts. I had just cut up a pineapple a couple of weeks ago when my daughter burned her hand on the oven. I gave her a chunk to hold on the burn until it quit hurting. BTW, she’s an adult, so no child negligence involved.
