Why Does Hair Loss Occur?
Hair loss can feel frustrating, but like most things, it’s your body’s way of telling you something is off balance. While there are often multiple contributors to hair loss, here are a few of the top culprits you should consider.
Hormonal Imbalance: Hormonal imbalances can cause your hair to thin or fall out. This is particularly common during postpartum periods or menopause, but it can also affect men. These shifts disrupt the hair’s growing cycle, leaving it brittle and prone to loss.
Most people don’t realize their hair is thinning… until it’s too late.
But by the time you see it on your brush or in the drain, it’s been happening for weeks — sometimes months.
What’s triggering it?
👉 You might be doing these 2 things daily — and they’re secretly shutting down your hair follicles. Find out here before it’s too late.
Chronic Stress: Everyone goes through tough times, but persistent stress can leave you pulling your hair out…literally. This condition is so common that it has a medical term, telogen effluvium. If this is the reason for hair loss, you can expect your hair to recover within 3-6 months.
Nutritional Deficiencies: If your diet is full of processed foods, you could be starving your body of the nutrients it needs. Lack of iron, B vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids can make your hair prone to breakage, as your body tries to preserve itself. If your diet is lacking in Vitamin A or E, you’ll have a hard time growing your hair, so be sure to fill your plate with plenty of vegetables! Not any vegetables. Target these ones first!
Toxic Hair Products: If your hair is falling out, it may be time to read the labels of your body care products. Toxic products falsely market themselves as beneficial to hair, but can cause buildup that weighs hair down and eventually breaks it. Natural hair care products (like this DIY Nettle Bar) nourish your hair without creating poisonous buildup.
If making your own shampoo bar feels empowering… wait until you see what else you can replace.
Because here’s the truth: the biggest threat to your hair, your hormones, and even your long-term health might already be sitting in your shower.
Most store-bought products are loaded with hormone disruptors, synthetic fragrances, and hidden toxins that slowly wear down your body from the outside in.
They don’t just irritate your scalp — they penetrate your skin, get into your bloodstream, and trigger inflammation, hair thinning, mood swings, and more.
And yet, people keep using them — daily — because they don’t know how to stop.
Inside The Forgotten Home Apothecary, you’ll learn how to make your own natural shampoos, deodorants, tooth powders, salves, lotions, and more — all without the toxic fillers and fake fragrances the store-bought stuff is loaded with.

Holistic Ways to Reduce Hair Loss
Hair health is more connected to your overall wellness than you might think! As with anything, true healing of your hair shaft happens from the inside out. For healthy locks, eat a diet rich in healthy fats, grains, and fill your plate with fresh fruits and vegetables. Do your best to avoid heavily processed foods, which can deplete the body of core nutrients.
Reduce stress levels by taking time to meditate and enjoy your favorite calming activities. If you cannot take many breaks, incorporate adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha, which help your body handle stress more effectively.
Evaluate your cupboards to see if your hair care products include toxic fragrances, SLS, and parabens. If so, it’s time to toss these problematic items and embrace natural hair care, like our DIY Nettle Bar against hair loss. If your hair is used to toxins, you can naturally clarify it by rinsing with unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Be sure to add a scalp massage to your hair care routine, as this is an easy way to stimulate hair growth.
Remember that hair is made of the same substance as fingernails, and it regenerates in your sleep. Everyone’s sleep needs are different, but most people need at least 7 hours to achieve optimal health. Prioritize your rest, especially if hair loss is hormone-related.
If you’ve ever seen your hair clog the shower or bathtub drain, or you’re collecting clumps of it from your hairbrush, then you really need to try this. I’ve been there for years myself.
My hair got so thin, you could see my scalp at one point. But now it’s thicker, fuller, and healthier than ever. I just want you to try the serum that saved my hair and hopefully can do the same for you as well.

How to Make a DIY Nettle Bar Against Hair Loss
This fun DIY includes the best ingredients to protect you against hair loss. It’s a great alternative to traditional shampoos, which can leave your hair brittle and defenseless. We chose each ingredient carefully, starting with an all-natural soap base, which will nourish your hair without weighing it down.
The star of this recipe is nettles, which are known for their healing properties. When fresh, nettles have a stinging leaf that makes harvesting a pain, but their benefits are well worth the trouble. Nettles are rich in silica and Vitamin A, which strengthens hair follicles and reduces shedding. Studies are limited, but many use nettles as an alternative treatment for alopecia.
💡 Want to boost the power of this recipe even more?
Add a few drops of Stinging Nettle Tincture right into the soap base as it melts.
It delivers concentrated plant nutrients straight into your scalp and can more than double the effectiveness of this bar.
👉 Here’s the one I personally use — just a few drops is all it takes.
Aside from nettles, this recipe includes rosemary and rosemary essential oil, known for boosting hair growth, peppermint essential oil to stimulate the scalp, and a brilliant blend of oils to restore your hair’s natural sebum. Here’s how to make this remedy.
Ingredients
- ¼ cup water, boiling
- 3 tablespoons dried nettle leaves, finely crushed and divided
- 2 tablespoons dried rosemary, divided
- ½ pound natural melt-and-pour soap base (goat milk, shea butter, or glycerin)
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon castor oil
- 10 drops rosemary essential oil (optional)
- 5 drops peppermint essential oil (optional)
- Silicone soap mold
Step One: Place 2 tablespoons of dried nettles and 1 tablespoon of dried rosemary in the boiling water and let them infuse for 10-20 minutes. Strain and let cool.
Step Two: Cube the soap base and set it in a double boiler in a pan filled with 1-2 inches of water. Melt over low heat.
Step Three: Stir in the coconut oil, castor oil, essential oils, and the remaining dried nettles and rosemary. Add 1 teaspoon of the herbal infusion to give the soap bar extra healing properties.
Step Four: Gently stir the soap base to avoid excess bubbles, then pour into the silicone mold of your choice. Sprinkle extra herbs over the top if desired. Let harden for 2-4 hours, then carefully remove from the molds. You can place the molds on a baking sheet, then refrigerate them to speed up the process.
How to Use This Remedy
You can use your DIY Nettle Bar just like regular shampoo. Wet your hair, then rub the bar between your hands until it lathers. Massage the lather into your scalp for at least 1 minute to stimulate the hair follicles. Rinse thoroughly and follow up with an apple cider vinegar rinse for extra shine.
Use 2-3 times per week for best results, and always store in a dry place to make your bar last longer. This remedy is safe for adults and teenagers, but you can adapt it for children by eliminating the essential oils or cutting the amount in half.
You’ve already seen how powerful this tincture can be when added to the recipe.
But let’s be honest — not everyone has the time (or patience) to melt, infuse, stir, and mold everything from scratch.
And if your hair’s already falling out… you can’t afford to wait weeks hoping you did it right.
That’s why I always keep the Stinging Nettle Tincture on hand — ready-made, shelf-stable, and just a few drops a day.
It gives your scalp exactly what it needs — silica, vitamin A, and circulation support — without any of the DIY delays.

If Your Hair’s Falling Out… It’s Not Just About Hair
Let me be blunt.
If you’re seeing more strands in your brush or your drain, it’s not because you “need a better shampoo.”
It’s because something inside your body is breaking down — silently.
It could be your liver, overloaded with toxins and no longer processing hormones.
It could be your gut, leaking nutrients before they ever reach your hair roots.
It could be a blood sugar imbalance, a thyroid shift, or even chronic inflammation destroying your follicles from the inside out.
And here’s the worst part:
Most people never realize it… until the damage is permanent.
That’s exactly why The Forgotten Home Apothecary has become my lifeline.
It doesn’t just help you make your own remedies. It helps you understand what’s really going on — and how to fix it with recipes you can make at home.
Here are just a few you’ll find on the shelves:

It really stinks that all of your links are a sales pitch. Almost makes me want to unsubscribe! Please, if you are going to link something, make it actually go directly to the information. Under “hormone imbalance” you have a “find out here” link, which takes you to a sales pitch, as well as “doing these two things”. That is two sales pitches in one paragraph. Super tired of this! I already bought a book. One would think that was enough to get access to some deeper knowledge.
Did you happen to notice that Dr. Nicole is not actually the author of this article?! However, even so, it is her website after all.
Why is it that this is the only site that the video’s don’t work.
