Before You Blame Insomnia… Avoid These Sleep Killers
If you’re struggling with sleep, it might not be insomnia—it could be your daily habits. Some of the biggest sleep disruptors include too much screen time before bed, stress and racing thoughts, heavy meals late at night, caffeine in the afternoon, and an irregular sleep schedule. These factors interfere with melatonin production, spike cortisol levels, and keep your body in alert mode when it should be winding down.
✅ Fix it: Reduce screen time at least one hour before bed, manage stress with calming herbal teas like Chamomile, avoid heavy meals and caffeine in the evening, and stick to a consistent sleep schedule. These small changes can make a big difference in how well you sleep.

Benefits of Lavender for Sleep
Lavender is a common herb with many well-known benefits and uses, it is most famous for its calming or relaxing effects. It has a wide variety of uses and you can now learn about how intricately it can work to benefit sleep health.
Studies have revealed that Lavender has not only a positive effect on the depth of sleep but also helps increase activity upon awakening. This makes it such a practical herb choice for sleep health in any season of life.
It is a herb that can improve the depth of sleep ( helping increase your time spent in a slow wave deep sleep state), reduce interruptions in sleep, and improve your ability to fall asleep. It both promotes sleep and improves sleep quality.
The relevant herbal actions of Lavender here are as a sedative, nervine relaxant, analgesic, and anxiolytic. Many compounds play a role in powering Lavender’s benefits for sleep, but it is ultimately the unique synergy and essence of the entire plant that holds the healing and balancing herbal magic.
However, it is still interesting to know some of the phytochemistry of Lavender which contributes to its sleep benefits. Linalool which is an anxiolytic (anxiety-relieving) and stress relieving compound as well as Silaxen which is also an anxiolytic are two of the well-researched compounds present.
So, lavender will not only help you to reduce stress and anxiety for the purpose of deep sleep but it also offers a continued sense of calm during waking.
Benefits of Chamomile for Sleep
Chamomile is a very popular and well-known herb, it has been widely used in traditional herbal medicine practices as support for insomnia, sleep, relaxation, and sedation. Scientific studies on Chamomile efficacy for this purpose have shown various results, although only some studies show results that do back up the traditional uses for sleep.
First-hand human experiences of herbalists and people in the past and present repeatedly confirm that Chamomile benefits sleep. Similarly to lavender, the herbal actions of Chamomile that contribute to this effect are its nervine relaxant, sedative, and anxiolytic properties.
It has been shown that this herb can help those who struggle to get to sleep and improves the occurrence of awakening during sleep. Chamomile generally has no negative effect on daytime functioning when taken for this purpose.
It is worth noting that improved sleep quality is more noticeable with consistent longer term use of Chamomile.
Sedative effects are attributed to the flavonoid, apigenin present in Chamomile, it is said to bind to benzodiazepine receptors in our brains, triggering sedation and muscle relaxation.
Science-Backed Herbal Remedies for Better Sleep and Relaxation
The calming power of Lavender and Chamomile isn’t just folklore—it’s backed by science. Studies have shown that Lavender promotes deep sleep and relaxation, while Chamomile interacts with the same receptors in the brain as prescription sedatives—without the side effects.
