10 Herbal Remedies to Delay Aging
Who doesn’t want to look and feel young forever? The desire to maintain a youthful appearance has inspired several cosmetic procedures that include Botox, facelifts, and even placenta facials. While these options may get the surface results you need, the secret to ‘eternal youth’ may be more natural than you think.
This article highlights 10 herbal and natural remedies that tackle different aspects of the aging process, from sunspots to dull skin to mental acuity.
1. Ginseng
Ginseng (Panax ginseng) contains phytochemicals that stimulate and activate the skin’s metabolism. As per Ayurvedic medicine principles, they also help eliminate free radicals that accumulate when the skin is exposed to sunlight and pollution.
Ginseng is also a multivitamin that can build up and strengthen your facial muscles.
Although you can purchase ginseng capsules, it’s equally effective in beverage form. To make ginseng tea, bring water to a boil and let it cool for 30-60 seconds. (Don’t use boiling water.) Add about 1-2 teaspoons of ginseng root per cup of water. Steep for about five minutes before straining and serving.
2. Green Tea
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has long been recommended for weight loss. However, it is also rich in antioxidants that can, when used in topical form, increase cell turnover and combat wrinkles.
Make a cup of green tea over medium heat. Once it’s warm (but not hot), wet a facecloth with the tea and place it over your eyes. It will open your pores and infuse the tea into your skin. The anti-aging properties will help you get rid of bags under your eyes as well as brighten the rest of your face.
3. Ginger
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a common ingredient in kitchens everywhere. It also contains an antioxidant known as gingerol, which can fight collagen breakdown. This study found that ginger and its active compounds exhibited anti-aging effects in various types of age-related and degenerative diseases.
Start the day with a cup of hot tea containing grated ginger and honey to get maximum anti-aging benefits. For more targeted results, rub a small piece of fresh ginger onto your skin up to three times daily.
4. Turmeric
Like ginger, turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a kitchen ingredient that also has potent anti-aging properties. Curcumin, an essential compound in turmeric, has known anti-aging properties. It inhibits the buildup of the amyloid-b, a protein that causes oxidative (free radical) damage and inflammation in the brain and contributes to Alzheimer’s disease. This study found that turmeric contains antioxidants that can combat free radical damage.
You can cook with turmeric and even add a pinch to your morning coffee for an extra antioxidant boost. To make a tea, grate 1 1/2 teaspoons of fresh turmeric root and combine it in a small pot with a cup of water, a teaspoon of honey, and a pinch of black pepper. Heat on high just until it boils. Then turn the heat down to medium-low, simmer for 10 minutes, and enjoy!
5. Garlic
Garlic (Allium sativum) contains a powerful antioxidant called allicin that contributes to its strong smell and flavor. Upon digestion, allicin gives off sulfenic acid — the quickest-acting antioxidant that counteracts free radical damage. According to this study, garlic can help protect against cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, and premature aging.
You can add fresh garlic to salads, include it in sandwiches, and even make a tea by adding a clove of garlic to a cup of water and bringing it to a boil. Turn off the heat, add a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of lemon juice, and strain.
6. Cinnamon
Collagen is a protein that helps the skin retain its firmness and youthfulness. Collagen levels decrease with age, and with it, our skin’s elasticity decreases as well.
Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Verum) boosts collagen production, helping to prevent premature aging.
Cinnamon can be incorporated into your diet in a variety of ways: sprinkling it on toast or adding a fresh cinnamon stick to a mug of hot chocolate are both good examples. To make a face mask, mix one teaspoon of cinnamon with two tablespoons of honey until the cinnamon and honey are well blended. Apply the mixture to your face with your hands until you have uniform coverage. After 10-15 minutes, remove the mask with lukewarm water and pat your face dry.
7. Rosemary
Sun damage is the leading cause of wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. Incorporating rosemary (Salvia Rosmarinus) into your diet can enhance skin elasticity and prevent photodamage. You can take rosemary tea daily to reap its benefits. To make, fill a mug with boiling water, add two sprigs of fresh rosemary, and steep for five minutes. Add a drizzle of honey and squeeze lemon juice from a single lemon wedge.
Scientists have also found that rosemary significantly enhanced the quality of memory and increased mental alertness.

8. Citrus Fruit
Vitamin C, which is a natural brightener, is found in citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, making them an excellent way to combat the signs of aging.
By removing toxins and impurities, they help you look and feel better from the inside out.
To give your skin a more youthful glow, soak a piece of cotton in homemade orange juice, wipe your face with it, and notice the difference over time. To make your hands look and feel younger, mix lemon juice with sugar crystals to create an exfoliating scrub. It contains alpha-hydroxy acid, which helps peel away dead skin cells.

9. Papaya
Nutrient-rich and packed with vitamins, papaya has been shown to reduce signs of aging, such as wrinkles, dark spots, and enlarged pores. It contains vitamins A, C, and E, as well as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA), which are used in many anti-aging skincare products. In addition to eating papaya, you can also apply its peel to your face, neck or anywhere on your body you’d like to brighten and tighten.
10. Avocado
Avocados are a staple of Mexican cuisine. The health benefits of this highly versatile fruit can be attributed to the monounsaturated fat, which contributes to softer skin and increased elasticity. Additionally, it keeps your skin hydrated and facilitates the absorption of essential vitamins and minerals.
Adding a few slices of avocado to your sandwiches and salads every day can produce noticeable results over time.

I love all the information you provide, thank you! I have a question about the herbs etc in this article. Can they be combined into one face treatment or tea? Or are there negative interactions that might occur? For instance, mixing ginger, lemon, garlic, rosemary with honey for a face mask?
Lynn. Just an old lady here. Try some combo’s for your taste. All are herbs. I’ve used honey alone as face mask. You press your fingers against honey on skin and it brings circulation to your face. A rosy glow. Be a pioneer. lol
Thank you Judy!
Can you eat the seeds of citrus fruits, avocado, or papaya?
They are edible, but not sure if people chew them as opposed to just blending them into smoothies. I have only had them in smoothies.
Yes, you can. I would not do it a lot. Apricot seeds have arsenic in them, but are used for prostate cancer and some other types. Avocado seeds are good ground up. There is a video on internet for doing that. Kind of think of them as ‘medicine’ how much you would take. Search internet for their properties. I have zero degrees. Just old lady who is into old ways. lol If you were starving would you eat them? Yes.
I have read that avocado seeds have a lot of minerals in them. I tried eating one and discovered that they taste extremely bitter. They taste terrible.
Avocado, citrus and papaya are technically not herbs. They are highly nutritious foods. Herbs have non-woody stems that die off at the end of the growing season. The title is misleading. 7 Herbs and 3 Fruits would be more accurate.
eating papaya seeds also rid of parasite worms
definately yes!
After you shread de avocado pit and drink your tea. use those shavings left on the pan to put on as a salad topping.
Also, you can use add them to your smoothies or shakes. It doesn’t add any flavor, but you know you are adding a lot of nutrition on your diet
I grind the avocado seeds and sprinkle on lots of stuff. Keep in frig. I also use papaya seeds mixed with mustard honey and pepper. Delicious.
Ms. Keefe, these remedies have all become part of my life in recent years, but I was baffled that one supplement was not included in your list — aloe vera. I have had girlfriends tell me they notice a difference in my skin with the addition of aloe vera. But nevertheless, you compiled a good list. Best of luck to you.
Hi Richard. Did you use Aloe Vera topically, or internally….did you eat the flesh?
Great information,
The book are worth buying . and what ever you write down that your reading here.

Very important to eliminate junk food, processed food, and all soda pop… Lots of you still don’t get it…. As at our Costco’s most carriages still are loaded to the hilt with this poison…
Honey is just sugar with a very tiny amount of hydrogen peroxide. I avoid it like I avoid sugar. Maybe stevia drops or powder would be better.
