What Happens If You Boil A Lemon?
Lemon water has been popular for some time now and you may already squeeze a lemon into a cup of water each morning (or evening). The juice of the lemon is known to give you energy and has a host of other medicinal benefits that I’ll run through. However, did you know that lemon peel is also nutritious? If you boil the lemon rind you can extract good properties from it making it an even more nutritious drink.
It’s best to make this fresh every day since oxidation makes the Vitamin C less potent and this negative process will increase the longer it is exposed to oxygen and light. Let’s take a look at the enormous health benefits that lemons provide.
The Medicinal Benefits Of Lemon
First, we’ll look at lemon peel and how it can help keep you healthy, and then the lemon juice. The reason that lemon peel is so nutritious is largely due to the compound, D-limonene, that it contains. This is a flavonoid antioxidant that helps fight many diseases.
What Diseases Can D-limonene Help Treat or Prevent?
- Type 2 Diabetes – it acts as a protein glycation inhibitor and stimulates antioxidant enzyme activity.
- Cancer – it can help prevent or kill off mutated cells in certain types of cancers including stomach, colon, and skin cancer.
- Heart Disease – it can increase “good cholesterol” levels as well as lower blood sugar and blood pressure, which can all be factors that lead to heart disease.
- Inflammatory Gastrointestinal Diseases – it may lower the risk of developing diseases such as peptic ulcers.
- Gallstones – it can help treat gallstones by dissolving them.
- Anxiety and Depression – due to its anti-inflammatory nature it is considered to have anti-stress properties which lower anxiety levels and have a calming effect.
D-limonene also boosts the immune system in general by increasing the activity of certain white blood cells (macrophages) that fight foreign bodies making them essential for a healthy immune system.
What Diseases Can Lemon Juice Help Treat or Prevent?
While there are some crossovers between the benefits provided by the rind and juice, lemon juice is mostly regarded for its high content of Vitamin C. This is important to maintain good heart health and can also help fight certain cancers.
Here are some other amazing health benefits the Vitamin C in lemons will provide:
- Kidney Stones – citric acid can help prevent kidney stones from forming.
- Arthritis – as an antioxidant, it reduces inflammation in the body helping to relieve joint pain and decreasing the risk of developing arthritis in the first place.
- Dementia – people with higher blood levels of Vitamin C are less likely to be affected by dementia.
- Eye Diseases – studies have shown that people who have a higher Vitamin C intake are at less risk of developing cataracts.
The Health Benefits Of Drinking Water
I’m sure you’re aware that drinking ample water each day is essential. As well as keeping us hydrated it has many other medicinal benefits. Part of the reason some people like to drink lemon water is they don’t enjoy drinking water straight. Adding an extra glass of water a day with lemon is a great way to contribute to your daily quota by adding flavor.
Here are some of the positive effects that water has on our bodies:
- It flushes bacteria from the bladder.
- It helps to stabilize the heartbeat and blood pressure levels.
- It regulates our body temperature.
- It can relieve joint pain by lubricating the joints.
- It carries oxygen around the body.
- It’s essential for the bowel and digestive system.
- It dissolves nutrients and minerals so that it’s possible for them to travel around the body.
The Best Way To Boil A Lemon
Now that we’ve looked at the health benefits, I’m going to show you how to get the most of your lemons by boiling the lemon rind. The water will absorb more beneficial properties by boiling it, meaning the nutrients will be leached into the water.
Ingredients
- 1 x Organic lemon
- 1.5 x Cups of filtered water
Equipment
- 1 x Small cooking pot
- 1 x Lemon squeezer (optional)
- 1 x Container or vessel
Method
The reason I use an organic lemon in this recipe is to avoid pesticides. If you can’t get organic lemons make sure you wash your lemon well under running water first and use a vegetable scrubber to ensure it’s as clean as possible.
- Rinse your lemon under running water in case there is any debris or dirt on it.
- Cut your lemon in half.
- Squeeze the lemon using a squeezer or you can manually squeeze it into a glass or container and reserve it for later, taking out any seeds that fall in.
- Cut your two lemon rind halves in half again, so that you have 4 quarters.
- Add your lemon rind pieces and 1.5 cups of filtered water to your pot and turn the stove on to high heat.
- Bring it to a boil and leave for 3 minutes.
- As soon as the time is up, turn off the heat and remove the pot from the hotplate or stovetop.
- Pour the liquid and rinds into a container and let it steep (and cool) for approximately 20 minutes.
- When it’s cool enough to touch, pick out the lemon rind pieces and gently squeeze them into the water to get any remaining pulp and juice out, then discard them.
- Add the rest of the juice that you reserved into the mixture and pour it into a glass. It’s ready to drink.
It’s a good idea to rinse your mouth out with water after drinking it to help protect your tooth enamel from the citric acid found in lemons. There are also some other steps you can take to help this.
How To Protect Your Tooth Enamel
Citric acid is known to dissolve tooth enamel. This doesn’t mean you should avoid it at all, but there are some helpful points to remember so that you prevent any damage from happening. Here’s how:
- Rinse your mouth with water after drinking the lemon water.
- Use a straw so that the liquid bypasses your teeth and it limits the contact the lemon has with them.
- Don’t brush your teeth for at least 1 hour after drinking it. This is because the citric acid will leave the enamel softer and more prone to erosion from the toothbrush.
- Chew sugar-free gum to produce more saliva.
You don’t have to use a straw or chew gum if you don’t have these and/or don’t want to buy them. However, always remember to rinse your mouth with water and don’t brush your teeth within 1 hour. This lemon water is safe (and beneficial) to drink every day and it’s best to take it in the morning, although if your routine can’t accommodate this, just stick to a regular time so you get into the habit and form a solid routine.

Question: Why do you have 5 cups of water in the ingredients list, when you only use 1 1/2 cups of water?
Hi Lynne,
Thank you for your comment.
We apologize for this. It was an editing error. It should be 1.5 cups of water.
Many blessings and good health!
1.5 cups or 5 cups water? I see both.
Hi Julie,
Thank you for your comment.

Are the benefits compromised when raw honey is added to lemon water?
If you add raw honey to the liquid when hot, then the raw honey is no longer ‘raw’, it has now become ‘cooked’ and therefore benefits of the ‘raw’ description is compromised, but there are many other benefits that remain intact. If you add the raw honey to the liquid when tepid or cooled, then all raw benefits remain intact.

Would it not be better to zest the lemon peel, then boil it all, let it cool, discard the rind and drink the juice with the zest in it?
Lol I didn’t see any comments or questions when I asked mine, I see it was already answered! Thanks so much for your prompt reply!
Perhaps more should be said about the source of your lemons. I live in a high agricultural area ( “The Fruit Basket of the World”)Produce is sent all over the worl from here. the earth trembles early in the morings from all the trucking activity. All is grown using artificial fertilizers and sprayed with who-knows-what, for insect control. I avoid peelings because of this and think most peelings and rinds, unless certified organic, should be avoided.
Hi Kathleen,
Thank you so much for your comment.
The thick peel of oranges, lemons, and limes means that most of the pesticides stay on the outside of these fruits instead of making their way into the flesh. So yes, you may want to seek out organic citrus fruits.
Many blessings and good health!
I was told by my urologist that lemon juice is a bladder irritant. I had never heard this before. I drank lemon juice daily for years. Now I don’t know if it was the stopping of the lemon juice or medication he gave me that improved my bladder. Does anyone else know anything about this?
Hi Jo,
I am not a Dr, nor do l claim to give out medical advice. I only give my opinion from experience. It has been my experience that medical professionals have very limited experience or knowledge of natural health care. They’re not taught this in medical school. They are only taught to diagnose illness and then prescribe medication and/or treatment. Natural medicine is not profitable for the sponsors of medical schools because natural remedies cannot be patented but the synthetic components can be. Lemons are a great example of this. It has been my experience that Lemons prepared this way can be beneficial to kidneys, bladder, and my urinary tract. I have kidney disease and gastrointestinal disease but have benefited greatly from this Lemon juice and peel drink to the point of no longer needing to take several medications. Also my cholesterol has dropped to normal bad cholesterol and high good cholesterol. It helped me. My problem is finding organic Lemons!
I have to agree with all you said. That is why I am not sure it is true 🙂
This is a ridiculous statement from an allopathic doctor. They are not taught about home remedies, neither does medicine do anything other than drug us and make us sicker at times..
I have gout, so I must limit the acidity in my system as it tends to increase the uric acid’s impact on my system. Do you have info on whether this has impacted others similarly. Lemon water sounds good for other reasons, but I have stayed away from it due to the gout issue.
My sister once ate too many satsumas in a short period of a few days and she developed a urinary tract infection. The doctor told her that it directly from eating too much in a short time. Too much acidity. Satsumas are small but the trees produce hundreds of them and my sister having a tree was eating 4 to 6 a day. Though they are not as strong as lemons, it is still an acidic citrus fruit so the same idea applies.
I’m wondering if the skin of lemons and limes do have the same effect. In Mexico the lemons are much more difficult to find then the limes.
All I know is in Traditional Thai Medicine we often use lemons and limes interchangeably
Thanks Jo, sounds logical and I hoped so to. Here I go 🙂
Can the lemons be soaked in water over night for the same effect? I have read that heat, boiling, depletes and/or reduces the vitamin quality.
Hi Anneke,
Cooking the lemons can lead to some loss of nutrients but not to a large extent. The peels still can provide numerous health benefits even if you boil them or cook them to make them easier to eat. Just make sure you clean the peels properly before eating to get rid of any pesticide on them.
Many blessings and good health!
Thank you for this, I’ll be making this in a couple days. Can you do the same with oranges?
Hi Jennifer,
Orange peels have a high nutrient value, but eating them raw can be a little difficult to digest. Also, the bitter and dry texture of the peels may make them unpleasant to eat. So yes, as an alternative, you can boil these orange peels to get rid of bad taste and still get the benefits.
While the orange flesh contains about 71 milligrams of vitamin C, the peel contains over 136 milligrams. The peel is also replete with copper, calcium, magnesium, folate, vitamin A and other B vitamins, and dietary fiber.
Many blessings and good health!
Its unhealthy to steep freshly boiled water in a plastic container and then drink it. Im sure lemon water is even worse. (The plastics leach into the water)
What is a good alternative if you’re allergic to citrus?
Hi Cecil,
Vitamin C is vital for your immune system, connective tissue, and heart and blood vessel health, among many other important roles.
While citrus fruits may be the most famous source of vitamin C, a wide variety of fruits and vegetables are rich in this vitamin and may even exceed the amounts found in citrus fruits. By eating some of the foods suggested above each day, your needs should be covered.
Many blessings and good health!
I agree that eating raw peel, these days, covered with poisons is a concern
HOWEVER.
If you boil the peels, all herbicides and pesticides will evaporate immediately into the air, as they are called Lower Volatile Organics (low boilers)… theyve got a lower boiling point than water, so the poisons boil off .. and they’re completely safe to consume.
It’s like when you boil a pot of water… the tiny bubbles that boil at the bottom, before the full roll boil, those little bubbles are examples of impurities boiling off first
I wouldn’t count on the pesticides and herbicides evaporating. They are oil based and would stay behind in the pot just as added toxic flouride. If anything evaporates it would be water and the beneficial properties from the lemon. Just my opinion of course.
I love to practice medicine with out a liscense………rule of thumb……………….just do not over indulge
If I make this is bulk, can I freeze the juice without losing the nutritional benefits?
Hi Natalie,
The best time to drink fresh fruit juice is directly after it’s been squeezed. That way, all of the available vitamins and minerals are still present. If drinking your freshly squeezed juice isn’t possible within two or three days, yes you can freeze it. That will stop the nutrients from being quickly lost. An airtight, glass container is again best. Make sure to leave about half an inch of space at the top for expansion when freezing. It’s recommended to thaw your frozen fresh juice in the refrigerator. When thawed, drink it as soon as possible.
Many blessings and good health!
Foraging for wild foods:
https://wildplantsguide.com/book/?hop=lostherbs
A few things not mentioned in this wonderful video:
1.) If in doubt, ask for permission from land owners before trampling around where you could be mistaken for someone up to no good.
2.) It might be best for women foragers not to go it alone, have a buddy with you.
3.) Be aware that the herbicide, Roundup, is extensively used by farmers and other landowners and could still be fresh on the very wild plants you’re foraging to eat! If the plants look wilted this could indicate they’re in the first throws of dying after being sprayed. Back off!
4.) Aways leave some mushrooms and other plants you’re foraging in tact to reproduce their kind for generations to come.

Does one receive the same benefits from drinking a glass of water with fresh lime juice every morning (or evening) as you do with lemon juice? The same? More or less beneficial?!
for fred (posted 4.31 aug 11th 2021) fred .. the only juice that helps get rid of Uric acid is sour cherry juice.. you don’t need lifelong tablets.. when you get any signs of gout coming on.. drink a cup of sour cherry juice in the morning and one at night for two weeks.. cherry good from tesco is 50% s.cherry content. and not too pricey.. avoid costly s.cherry juice of the internet.. very pricey.. it does work.. 100% .
