8 Effective Home Remedies to Treat A Heat Stroke

Heat is something that many of us detest. Older adults, in particular, are prone to heat-related issues, which may even cause untimely death. The elderly make up the majority of deaths caused by heat strokes. Hence, it is crucial that you understand what heat stroke is all about so that we can prevent it. Moreover, knowing remedies for this health-related issue will also help you in averting fatalities.

Home Remedies to Prevent a Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is an emergency and should be treated immediately with the help of trained medics. However, there are things you can do at home to help prevent the situation from occurring. Home remedies such as some of the herbs found in your garden are beneficial in avoiding heat stroke.

Peppermint Bath

Peppermint helps soothe your nerves as well as enhances blood circulation, which in turn lessens the effect of too much exposure to heat. It also aids in nausea that people with heat stroke might experience. A cool bath is great to help regulate body temperature and cool down the person with heat stroke. Please note that this is best done for mild cases of heat stroke only. Severe cases require more immediate action from trained professionals.

Ingredients:

  • 6 oz peppermint leaves
  • 10-12 cups of water

Steps:

  • Bring 10-12 cups of water to boil in a large pot. Turn off the stove once boiling starts.
  • Add all peppermint leaves and cover.
  • Leave alone for 20-30 minutes. Strain.
  • Add infusion to the bath of cool water. Make sure the temperature is tolerable.
  • Soak in the tub for 20 minutes or more. In cases when soaking isn’t possible, use a sponge or towel in wiping yourself. Place towels on the forehead, across the feet and the wrists for 5-10 minutes, and repeat as necessary.

Sandalwood Paste

Sandalwood has cooling properties that help with heat stroke. Moreover, sandalwood helps control profuse sweating by regulating your body’s heat mechanism. Using sandalwood will also help calm the nerves because it has a pleasant and soothing fragrance.

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 tbsp Sandalwood powder
  • Water

Steps:

  • Add enough water to the powder to form a paste.
  • Apply to forehead and chest to ease heat stroke symptoms.

Sandalwood essential oil may also be used on the forehead and chest if sandalwood powder isn’t readily available at home.

Onion Paste

The use of onion is probably one of the most common home remedies for heat stroke that has been proven a great remedy over the years.

Ingredients:

  • Onion

Steps:

  • Peel onion and grind.
  • Apply paste/juice behind your ears, chest, and under your feet.
  • Leave it, and do not rinse.

Store tightly in a cool place away from the sun. Discard after 48-72 hours.

Mung Bean Tea

These tiny beans have amazing benefits for the human body, one of which is helping in the treatment of heat stroke. Mung beans help lower down body temperatures and hydrate the body, which are key factors in preventing heat stroke occurrence.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried mung beans
  • 3 cups water

Steps:

  • Make mung bean tea by boiling the mung beans for a good number of minutes.
  • Strain and let cool

Since this is a fairly easy step to do, I recommend making fresh mung beans every time you want to drink it. Storing it for a long time may not be advisable.

Cilantro

Cilantro is a great remedy for heat stroke because it helps tone down the heat produced by the body. On an important note, people who are not familiar with herbs must not confuse cilantro with coriander. While both come from the same coriander plant, they are still different in taste, texture, uses, and nutritional values. Coriander refers to the flowers and seeds of the plant, hence, the term coriander seeds. Meanwhile, cilantro refers to the leaves and stems of the coriander plant.

It is essential to distinguish the differences so that you will not be confused about its effects on the body. For example, coriander seeds only have 8.9% water content, while fresh cilantro has 92.2% water. What you need for heat stroke is water to replenish what you have lost and hydrate your body.

Ingredients:

  • A lot of cilantro leaves
  • Water, depending on the amount of cilantro
  • Sugar, to taste

Steps:

  • Blend cilantro with enough Water to extract the juice.
  • Add sugar to taste and mix well.
  • Refrigerate for 5 to 10 minutes before drinking.

Since this is a fairly easy step to do, I recommend making fresh cilantro juice every time you want to drink it. Storing it for an extended time may not be advisable.

Unripe Mango Pulp

Raw mangoes are also considered as one of the effective home remedies for heat stroke. The juice of raw mango is a refreshing drink and serves as a health infusion that cools down the body to prevent heat stroke from occurring. However, to make it more effective, it should be used with other spices that boost its effectiveness, which will provide you with energy and balance electrolyte loss due to heat.

Ingredients:

  • 2 unripe mango (green)
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp mint leaves, chopped
  • 2 cups Water
  • Sugar, to taste
  • Salt, to taste

Steps:

  • Boil mangoes until they become soft and discolored. Let cool, and remove the skin.
  • Squeeze the pulp from the mangoes.
  • Mix all ingredients, add 2 cups of water and blend.
  • To serve, you may add ice on the drink.

Coconut Water

Coconut water is an excellent, effective home remedy for heat stroke, given its power to cool down the heat within the body. It is also a healthy drink that is great for all people of all ages. The use of coconut water helps replenish electrolytes lost due to excessive exercise or sweating. It also keeps you hydrated while keeping the body temperature down.

Ingredients:

  • Fresh coconut

Steps:

  • Get one fresh coconut, and cut the top part.
  • Transfer the coconut water to a glass, or you can drink it directly from the coconut shell itself.
  • You can store fresh coconut water in a fridge for 24 hours. Do not let it stay for too long as it will not be as effective when it isn’t fresh.

Sugarcane Juice

Sugarcane is a high energy booster and treats dehydration, which makes it a sufficient remedy to help prevent and treat heat stroke. Sugarcane helps cool down the body on temperature-related health conditions. However, it is advised that sugarcane juice should not be taken at night, but rather in the afternoon.

Ingredients:

  • Sugarcane
  • Water
  • Strainer
  • Mint leaves (optional)
  • Salt, to taste

Steps:

  • Wash and carefully peel sugarcane with a big knife.
  • Cut sugarcane into smaller pieces and blend.
  • Add some water and blend again. Make sure that the pieces are well-blended and grounded.
  • Place the strainer on top of a jar/container. Pour over the sugarcane onto the strainer and filter properly. You can press or squeeze it to remove the juice better.
  • Add mint if desired, and salt to taste.
  • You can serve it with ice cubes to boost its cooling effect.

The presence of herbs in our gardens can save lives if we know how to use them properly. Getting acquainted with the different herbal plants you have and their effects on certain health-related diseases such as heat stroke is crucial for preventing and treating untoward fatalities.

We have gone to the doctor so with years they tried to find out what is wrong with her she’s had every test done and we’ve been to the emergency rooms but by the time she gets there and we get to the back to see someone she’s over it so it’s kind of impossible to Africa in the midst of having one of these episodes. Hi Alicia,

Thank you so much for your comment.
I am so sorry that you have to go through this.

I recommend you herbs that increase the energy, stamina and the blood flow as well. Your mother should try green tea, gingko, rhodiola and maca.
I also recommend a lot of rest and breathing exercises, as they are beneficial for this problem.
